Swimming is Australia’s most successful Olympic and Paralympic sport, generating almost 50% of Australia’s medals. Nine of Australia’s top 10 Olympic medal winners are swimmers. This is the result of a world-class high performance system, a national footprint of eight High Performance Hubs and a heightened focus on technology and innovation.

Swimming is also Australia’s largest participation sport. Ausplay data reveals there are 5.34m organised swimmers, with over 50% growth in the last 10 years. We are a sport for life and our community spans from 6 month old learn to swimmers to year old masters swimmers. Our GoSwim Learn to Swim program teaches over , kids per annum and our Junior Excellence program inspires the next generation of talented swimmers and coaches.

We are looking for a Paralympic Performance Health and International Classification Lead to join our team. This position is responsible for leading the performance health support for the Australian Dolphins Para Swimming Team in the daily training environment to ensure athletes are capable of performing when it matters. This position will also lead preparation for International Classification to minimise performance risks associated with classification and optimise classification outcomes.

This position is a part time employee role at a loading of 0.4 FTE.

Principle duties include:

Performance Health Support

  • Facilitate the design, planning and delivery of individualised performance health plans to assist categorised Para swimmers train and live a healthy life while preparing, travelling, staging and competing at benchmark events, focused on performing when it matters. 
  • Coordinate and lead high functioning clinical management teams to support individual athlete performance health plans for identified Para swimmers with high support needs or complex medical conditions, which may involve non-sport medicine and health professionals.
  • Work with SA performance support leads and National Institute Network staff to manage return to training/competition plans for identified Para swimmers following injury, illness, or medical procedures.
  • Lead the documentation and management of performance health and return to training/competition plans for identified Para swimmers in the Athlete Management System (AMS) to allow for transfer of care and management of complex medical issues from the daily training environment into campaign environments.
  • Coordinate the preparation and dissemination of detailed health and medical information on categorised Para swimmers to relevant staff, acknowledging privacy and confidentiality processes appropriately.
  • Lead the education of athletes, coaches, parents/carers and staff in relation to optimal performance health behaviours to enhance swimming performance.
  • Lead the education of athletes, coaches, parents/carers and staff in relation to impairment specific considerations for health and performance.
  • Lead the education of athletes, coaches, parents/carers and staff as to the performance health considerations and care required to enhance swimming performance in Para swimmers with high support needs or complex medical conditions.
  • Paralympic Campaign and Benchmark Event Support

  • Work with the General Manager - Paralympic Program and Paralympic Campaign Performance Support Lead to ensure appropriate medical support is available at benchmark events and in Dolphins Team environments.
  • Work with the SA Chief Medical Officer and Paralympic Campaign doctor to ensure all medical issues are well documented and understood prior to travel for swimmers with high support needs or complex medical conditions, including implementation of a documentation and governance process to ensure the Campaign doctor has final say on all travel approvals.
  • In conjunction with the General Manager – Paralympic Program, provide Team and campaign performance health insights and reports where required.
  • International Classification Support

  • Understand and keep abreast of World Para Swimming Classification policies and procedures and advise the SA Paralympic Program on international trends and changes relating to classification.
  • Maintain up to date records of International Classification status, needs, opportunities and risks for categorised Para swimmers.
  • Coordinate communication and preparations for International Classification for eligible categorised athletes, including collation, review and submission of classification documentation.
  • Advise and support staff, athletes, coaches and parents around the International Classification process including advice around how a swimmer’s impairment may impact international classification processes and outcomes.
  • Advise SA Paralympic Program management on classification risks for mitigation and management purposes.
  • Lead education initiatives across the SA Paralympic Program to improve awareness and understanding of International Classification processes and requirements.
  • Work with the General Manager - Paralympic Program to ensure appropriate classification support is available during International Classification assessments.
  • System Support

  • Be an active member and contributor to the broader SA Paralympic Program.
  • Be an active member and contributor to the broader SA Performance Support Program.
  • Work with the General Manager - Paralympic Program, General Manager - Performance Support and National Institute Network programs to facilitate applied research to enhance performance health outcomes within the SA Paralympic Program.
  • Lead processes to ensure appropriate duty of care for athletes and staff is effectively implemented in regard to medicine and health in the daily performance environment, at benchmark events, and in Dolphins team environments.
